After sustaining major head damage, a Great Horned owl named GiGi was transferred to Mississippi’s Wild at Heart Rescue last month. The doctors assumed she had been hit by a car and suffered a serious concussion.
GiGi not only had parasites, but she also had aspergillosis, a fungal infection that is akin to pneumonia in people. The Rescue’s founder and director, Missy Dubuisson, told The Dodo
GiGi might not have received the considerable treatment she required if it hadn’t been for Douglas Pojeky, the facility’s president. The owl seemed to be aware of this, as she soon bonded with Pojeky, a rehabilitator known as the “birds of prey whisperer” in the area.
